All responsible cat owners should take the health of their cat seriously. Unfortunately they can’t tell you when something is wrong with them, so you must be vigilant. Below is a list of the five top indicators of poor cat health.
Changes in behaviour
You know your own cat and should be able to notice if they begin acting a little differently. So if your cat suddenly becomes withdrawn where it is usually quite sociable, this is a good sign that something could be wrong. Or perhaps your cat begins whining or meowing when they are usually very quiet.
Weight loss
If you cat loses weight either gradually or rapidly, this can be a symptom of poor health. Whilst it could indicate one of several illnesses, it is often a sign of liver problems.
Condition of coat
If whilst grooming your cat you come across one or several lumps you must have it examined by a vet. Smaller lumps often indicate ticks on cats, whilst larger lumps could be something more serious, such as cancer. A coat that has become matted or perhaps patchy can also indicate that your moggy is unwell.
Toilet routine
If your well toilet trained cat suddenly begins urinating throughout the house this could be the sign that it has feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). This is a painful inflammation that can in some cases be fatal. The main indication that your car is suffering from FLUTD is if it is constantly licking its genitals.
Additional visual signs
In addition to those already listed there are a few other visual signs to keep an eye out for. A sinus infection or cold is often the problem if your cat looks as though it is crying. These two conditions can also lead to excessive nose discharge. A build up of dark brown ear wax can also indicate cat health is not as it should be. If you spot any of the signs listed in this article then it is important to contact your vet and seek their advice or arrange a visit.
