Can You Train A Cat?

Cats are notoriously independent and have a mind of their own. Is it possible to train your cat new tricks?

Mant cat owners think that there cat is simply too moody and sullen to listen. Many owners feel that their cats are untrainable simply because they are independent and headstrong. Pets frequently fail to obey their owners simply because they fail to understand what it is you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.

A Good Cat:

Training your cat takes time and patience. It requires more of this than it does with a dog. Using positive reinforcement is a good way to achieve the results you desire. Please do not scold your cat because your cat is more than likely to misbehave when you are not paying attention. Rather, praise good behaviour. Any cat is able to learn. Try to commence when your cat is young about eight to ten weeks. But, the pet will do well at any age.

How do you get started?

When in the process of training your cat the first thing to start with is for your cat to come when called. Hold your cat’s favorite treat and call his name. Start by making sure you cat is in a good mood. It is important to make sure that there isn’t a lot of noise either. Distractions will only slow down tha cat or befuddle him. Decide on one command and use it solely. The command should be short and simple. For example, here kitty or come kitty work extremely well. It is important to get down on their level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Give the direction. Your voice should be happy and excited. When the cat comes to you, reward him with the treat. Insure that you praise and reward your cat. Then, try moving away and do the same thing again. The goal is to use the same tone of voice and the same command. Work on it for no longer than ten minutes. If the cat is bored or frustrated, stop for the time. Try and do this for about two times a day for about a week. Only when your cat has mastered a command is it possible to move onto another.

There are several things that your cat has to learn for his own well being these are also necessary to taech all cats. For example, your cat needs to learn to tolerate a harness and a lead in case you are required to travel with him. Furthermore, your cat should learn to use a carry crate.

What about a harness and leash?:

To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain him once it is in place. Praise your cat for it. Reward your kitty with a treat for responding so well. Once he is accustomed to wearing it attach the leash and allow him to lead you throughout the area. Attempt to coax your cat into following you with treats and praise. Many cats will learn to heel on the leash. But, most will not. All should learn to not panic or to struggle, though when wearing a leash.

A Carry Crate:

When it comes to the crate, it can be done a little simpler. Cats enjoy warm safe places so ensure you put a comfortable blanket and maybe even a toy inside the crate. Give him praise when you place him in it. Try leaving your cat there for a few minutes. Ensure you let him out within three to five minutes. Try not to offer him praise when he leaves the crate because you do not want him to think this is the good behaviour. Make sure you offer rewards whenever he goes in. Leave the cat in the crate a little longer each time. Your cat will eventually be trained well enough to keep him there.

I hope that these simple hints will highlight how useful it can be to discipline your cat.
